Overview
Discovering what floats and how to make a model boat are the key activities in this Adventure. Prior to any activity, use Scouting America SAFE Checklist to ensure the safety of all those involved. Requirements
Requirement 1
Identify five different types of boats.
Activities:
- Color the Boats (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 2, prep 2) Color the boats in the Tiger handbook.
- Model Boats (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 5, prep 2) Identify different types of boats using models.
- Visit a Marina (Travel, energy 3, supplies 1, prep 5) See real boats by visiting a marina.
Requirement 2
Identify five things that float and five things that do not float.
Activities:
- Floating or Sinking? (Outdoor, energy 3, supplies 4, prep 3) In a tub discover things that float and things that do not.
Requirement 3
Build or create a model boat and float it on the water. This can be made from recycled materials or other items.
Activities:
- Crafty Boat (Outdoor, energy 3, supplies 4, prep 3) Make a model boat from recycled and craft supplies.
- Paper Boat (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 2, prep 2) Fold paper to make a boat using the Tiger handbook.
- Raingutter Regatta™ Floating Boat (Indoor, energy 3, supplies 5, prep 2) Make a Raingutter Regatta™ boat.
Requirement 4
Show that you can put on and fasten a life jacket correctly and learn when it is safe to enter a boat.
Activities:
- Life Jacket Relay (Indoor, energy 5, supplies 4, prep 2) Once Cub Scouts learn how to proper fit a life jacket conduct a relay race.
- Proper Fit – Proper Safety (Indoor, energy 3, supplies 4, prep 2) Cub Scouts try on a properly fitted life jacket.
