Overview
Gardening for fun and for food is how Lions will discover some of the wonders of natural science. Prior to any activity, use Scouting America SAFE Checklist to ensure the safety of all those involved. All participants in official Scouting America activities should become familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and applicable program literature or manuals.
Requirements
Requirement 1
Discover where the food we eat comes from.
Activities:
- Ground, Tree, Vine, Farm (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 2, prep 1) Activity that matches the food and where it comes from the ground, a tree, a vine, or a farm.
- Supermarket Fun (Travel, energy 2, supplies 2, prep 5) Visit a supermarket and arrange a tour of each department to learn where food for that department comes from.
- Where Does That Food Come From (Indoor, energy 4, supplies 4, prep 3) Cub Scouts identify where different food comes from in this relay race.
Requirement 2
Plant a small garden outside or in a container.
Activities:
- Alright, Alright, Alright, It’s Avocado Time (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 3, prep 2) Plant an avocado seed.
- From Eggs to Planter (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 3, prep 2) Use recycled paper egg cartons to make a small herb garden.
- Sunflowers and Sunshine (Indoor, energy 2, supplies 3, prep 2) Decorate a small pot and plant sunflower seeds.
Requirement 3
Visit with an individual who can demonstrate different ways to garden (outside, greenhouse, container, etc.) and the basic skills needed to garden.
Activities:
- Lions Garden Like a Pro (Travel, energy 3, supplies 2, prep 5) Plan to visit a nursery, garden, community garden, or botanical garden that will allow Cub Scouts to do some planting.
